Wolves, Don't Cry - russian translation proposal for Farley Mowat's book.

The origin of the saying Never Cry Wolf .

The Boy Who Cried Wolf, also known as The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf, is a fable attributed to Aesop (210 in Perry's numbering system[1]). The protagonist of the fable is a bored shepherd boy who entertained himself by calling out "Wolf!". Nearby villagers who came to his rescue found that the alarms were false and that they had wasted their time. When the boy was actually confronted by a wolf, the villagers did not believe his cries for help and the wolf ate the flock (and in some versions the boy). The moral is stated at the end of the fable as:

Even when liars tell the truth, they are never believed. The liar will lie once, twice, and then perish when he tells the truth.

In reference to this tale, the phrase to "cry wolf" has long been a common idiom in English, described in Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable,[2] and modern English dictionaries.[3][4] The phrase "boy who cried wolf" has also become somewhat of a figure of speech, meaning that one is calling for help when he or she does not really need it. Also in common English there goes the saying: "Never cry wolf" to say that you never should lie, as in the above phrases.

Sustaining my difficulties as a mental illness, a problem with me, will be the end of the lies if I am vindicated . Watch for my success when I am gone .

There are some ways this fable can shed light on my situation :

  • If I am lieing when I say I need help : If I find myself in an impossible situation I throw up my hands and say " help me ". The school saw no problem, as did Dr. Busse, at OTM Hospital, offering something that would affect my vision knowing full well that I was in a drawing program and would not accept it; the police, when I walked into the station on White Oaks, as I normally passed by it on my way to first year classical animation, January 1994, saw a mental problem and must have communicated a concern to the hospital as I was admitted for two weeks after clearing out my locker at Sheridan between the police station and arriving at the hospital the same day. Did I " cry wolf " or did the police ? I had no income other than a forthcoming second part of a school loan, so not qualifying for welfare, failing school, and being stiffed by employer's left me the option of living on the street ( or in a kayak ), or a mental health solution as directed by my father, in 1992 . Subsequent crys for help are routinely taken up by the mental health community, as a rule . Read this in the light of the fact that although I could not pass animation I did receive $5,950 of funding in the completion of my animated film ( for which no artwork was paid for but I invested 700 hours of my own time, mostly drawing . ).
  • Is the mental health community lieing in a forced "illegitimate diagnosis" ? : If I do have an illness, it must be the cause of my problems. But a review of all my hospital admissions will reveal a real problem and severe stress, that is not addressed by any agency other than the mental health community, at a severe cost to the system. Indeed my original diagnoses may have been caused by the need to account for the cost of a two week hospital stay in 1994, where I was free to attend school but even took a bagged lunch from the hospital with me . No incident occurred during that period and I left without being on medication, and continued until May, after school ended, before I was ever on medication .
  • Are all of us perpetuating a lie, at the cost of the neglected : I cannot myself, extricate everyone from their lies. I prefer to let rot compost. If some will stand up and help a casualty of a system, a system that is for the benefit of all, why will others stand and pretend not to watch ? Better yet, let those in need help themselves, and do not live on the public purse as defenders of the neglected . Am I a threat ? Am I cruel, mean and abusive? Some would say "yes". If you are not one of them then allow me to work, earn and pay my own way . Do not try to be a benevolent dictator or a savior . Deal with me, not some imaginary mental image you read in a book. Do you have doubts ? Then pursue them and see that they are resolved . Are you too busy ? Doing what ? Waiting to die comfortably ? I'll see you another time then. Leave me alone to my self imposed solitude with all the other rejects . If you want to work together for something that just might be worthwhile let's keep in touch .
